With almost all mainstream, social and local media owned by far-right individuals in recent years, propaganda and misinformation has become the new normal, trustworthy, independent journalism more essential than ever.. Add right-wing influencers and independent media to the mix creating and spreading talking points and hate speech, and you have an aggressive assault on media freedom and democracy as well as all our personal rights and freedoms.
Authoritarianism and far-right religious extremism rely on ignorance, naivety and silence to flourish, which is why attacking and taking over a country’s media as well as their education is always a first order of business. Monopolizing the “free press”, flooding the zone with lies and scandals, rewriting history, and banning books are all signature moves of fascist regimes.
So, the next instalment in my series on fighting authoritarianism is shining a spotlight on independent media, subject matter experts and independent media that you can learn from, share, amplify, and trust. These are outlets and free thinkers who are operating beyond far-right elites, corporate conglomerates, and outside state-controlled systems so that you can equip yourself to resist, inform, and engage.

Freedom Of Speech: The Republican Party’s Authoritarian Takeover
On social media and TV, it’s easy to get lost in misleading and clickbait titles, false commentary, and outright misinformation, and knowing who and what to trust is half the battle. We are witnessing an outright assault on the free press under threat from the right-wing domination of mainstream media and social media, and Trump’s attacks on journalists and lawsuits against media who say anything he doesn’t like.
Almost every major platform, from X and Facebook to YouTube and TikTok, is now owned, controlled, or influenced by billionaires and political allies who lean hard to the right. That means the digital spaces we rely on for news are increasingly amplifying authoritarian talking points and the alt-right while suppressing credible voices. (You can read more about that in my post on media ownership and disinformation.)
Authoritarian regimes thrive on disinformation and propaganda, not accountability, which is why controlling both information and education is always a top priority. That’s why independent journalism and independent media are vital defences against propaganda and censorship. The public are flooded with propaganda, punishing truth-tellers, and convincing citizens that all journalists are liars putting out “fake news”.
When free and critical press collapses, the public loses its ability to hold power accountable, which is why supporting fact-based, independent media isn’t just about good journalism, it’s about defending democracy itself.

A Regime Suppressing Free Speech
Donald Trump’s years-long war on the press is one of the clearest modern examples of how authoritarians attack and control the press. He’s publicly mocked reporters with disabilities, threatened to jail journalists, and repeatedly called the press “the enemy of the people.” He has banned media outlets from White House briefings simply for refusing to use regime-approved language such as declining to refer to the U.S. as “The Gulf of America.”
His hostility towards factual, truthful reporting and accountability extends far beyond rhetoric, too. He’s filed lawsuits against CNN, The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Guardian, and, most recently, the BBC, all for publishing factual reporting about his conduct or his allies’ actions. He even recently went so far as to say that the press saying anything negative about him was treason.

- Trump v BBC / Panorama (United Kingdom, 2025) — $1 billion lawsuit threat and takedown demand. Trump has now taken his media intimidation and attacks global, a notable escalation in his assault on the free press. He has demanded via his lawyers that the BBC remove a Panorama film (for splicing two Trump remarks) or face paying $1 billion in damages. The BBC was given a short deadline. Add this last in your timeline as “threat/ongoing.”
Trump’s War On The Press Doesn’t Stop With Newsrooms
Entertainment and satire haven’t been spared either. Late-night hosts like Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Rogen have all faced multiple threats, investigations, and attempted censorship after criticizing Trump or mocking MAGA extremism on-air. Stephen Colbert had his show cancelled, Kimmel was taken off air within hours of Trump demanding it, and most recently Meyers was accused of being treasonous. It’s the exact same playbook that authoritarian leaders use everywhere: delegitimize humour, criminalize criticism, and make fear the default to silence opposing voices.
In one of the most chilling moves yet, Trump’s Secretary of Defence, Pete Hegseth, now calling himself the ‘Secretary of War’, demanded all military journalists submit to pre-approved regime talking points before publishing anything, and to essentially have everything they write go through a Pentagon approvals process. This is a move historically associated with fascist regimes, from Nazi Germany to modern authoritarian states.. As of October, only one far-right outlet retains an active Pentagon press pass; every other legitimate outlet handed theirs back rather than submit to extreme censorship. This escalating suppression shows exactly why supporting independent media is critical to sharing and preserving truth.

Independent Media Is Vital To Fight Authoritarianism
Authoritarianism in America is accelerating at a rapid rate. Independent media and investigative journalism are now among the few remaining tools standing between truth and total state control. Independent media and investigative journalism are now among the few remaining tools standing between truth and total state control. Supporting them — and the reporters who risk their safety to tell the truth — is one of the most powerful acts of resistance against authoritarian control.
Now more than ever, we need a robust independent media eco system, to have any real shot at defeating the rise of far-right extremism happening globally – and it takes all of us playing our part.
Whether you are in the United States, living elsewhere in the World, on the road as a solo traveler, where you get your information and who you choose to amplify genuinely matters. Every follow, share, subscription, and donation helps counter the constant flood of propaganda that fuels extremism and division.
So in this post, you’ll find my curated lists of leading independent journalism outlets, thought-leaders, activists, and experts whose work is helping to decode propaganda, power erosion, and the mechanisms of democratic back-sliding while covering the daily activities of the Trump and Republican party regime that mainstream media is ignoring or falsely reporting. Their commitments to transparency, accountability, fearless reporting, and knowledge sharing make them key allies in the fight against authoritarianism.
If you’re ready to get intentional about your media consumption, deepen your awareness, and support the independent voices that are fighting to keep democracy alive, let’s dive in. After all, in a world where authoritarianism thrives in silence and control, choosing what you read, who you follow, and who you amplify isn’t optional, it’s essential

The Independent Media Options Are Limited
These outlets are reader-supported, nonprofit, or collectively owned — meaning they’re free from corporate advertising and political manipulation. They provide genuine investigative journalism and accountability reporting that corporate media often avoids.
What Do I Mean By Independent Media?
By independent media and independent journalism I am talking about news outlets, who are usually either non-corporate or have a hybrid mix of corporate ownership with an independent newsroom. These are outlets who have been set up or managed so that they are not beholden to big advertisers, political donors, or government contracts. They tend to be audience-supported, mission-driven, and transparent about funding and editorial policies, while those that do have Corporate owners tend to focus heavily on investigative reporting and global issues. Regardless of their structure, these are all outlets whose loyalty lies with the public rather than shareholders, sponsors, or partisan agendas.
ProPublica
A nonprofit, award-winning investigative newsroom that consistently publishes some of the best deep dive investigative accountability journalism in the U.S. It shines a light on abuses of power and betrayals of public trust from political corruption to corporate abuse. They exemplify independent journalism that resists both corporate and state control.

The Guardian (US Edition)
Founded in 1821 and owned by The Scott Trust (a UK Trust), The Guardian remains one of the few major international outlets that doesn’t have corporate shareholders or political ownership. So it’s essentially a hybrid between mainstream and independent media. I’ve always loved The Guardian because of its commitment to investigative reporting, democracy, and global human rights. From climate accountability to far-right extremism, its journalists have exposed global corruption, government surveillance, and human rights abuses. The Guardian continues to set the standard for fearless, public-interest reporting.

The 19th News (The 19th) was co-founded by Emily Ramshaw and Amanda Zamora in 2020. It is a nonprofit, independent newsroom that operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. So its funding comes from a mix of donations, memberships, and grants. Major supporters include the Ford Foundation, Craig Newmark Philanthropies, and John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. Its independence and nonprofit status make it one of the few trustworthy and mission-driven U.S. outlets. As a women-owned and led news outlet, it focuses on gender, politics, and policy, which fills a major gap left by corporate media’s lack of representation

How We Can All Help Protect Democracy
“Regular citizens are the ones best suited to strengthen our democracy. This is especially true at the local level, where our sphere of influence is greatest.”Protect Democracy.
We are not helpless — far from it. Fighting authoritarianism begins with action at the individual and community level. Protect Democracy emphasizes focusing on our circles of concern, influence, and control, and challenging ourselves to complete as many actions as possible over the coming year. Some take seconds, some take months, and others are lifelong commitments — because protecting democracy is a generational struggle.
Here are some of the most practical, immediate steps anyone can take to start building resilience against disinformation and democratic erosion:
Action #1: Invest In Local News
Start where your impact is strongest — your community. Civic engagement is directly tied to healthy local journalism.
- Subscribe to your local newspaper or digital outlet.
- Share their stories on social media and encourage others to do the same.
- If you live in a “news desert,” consider supporting or even starting a local publication to fill the gap.
Action #2: Support National And International Independent Outlets
Balance your media diet by subscribing to substantive, reliable, and independent national or global outlets.
- Reassess your subscriptions and include reader-supported platforms like ProPublica, The 19th, The Lever, or The Guardian.
- Use tools like Ground.news to compare coverage and identify bias.
- If your main source of news is social media, reduce your reliance on algorithmic feeds and replace them with direct subscriptions to reputable outlets.
Action #3: Become An Expert At Spotting Misinformation
Authoritarianism thrives on confusion, manipulation, and false narratives. Equip yourself — and others — with the tools to identify disinformation in real time.
- Study the CISA (Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency) printable guide on misinformation and disinformation.
- Explore Poynter’s MediaWise resources to learn practical verification techniques.
- Once you’ve mastered these skills, teach them to friends, family, and coworkers — knowledge is contagious when it’s shared.

Action #4: Shift To A Healthier Information Diet
Protecting democracy also means protecting your mental and emotional resilience. Doomscrolling, outrage cycles, and constant exposure to propaganda can cause burnout or apathy — two conditions authoritarian movements depend on.
- Consume slower, in-depth reporting instead of constant reactive news.
- Follow subject-matter experts who focus on accuracy and evidence.
- Take breaks from digital overload to stay grounded and ready to act.
The Bottom Line
Democracy doesn’t just erode through elections or coups — it erodes when citizens stop paying attention, stop questioning, and stop funding truth. Supporting independent journalism and learning how to navigate information responsibly are among the most effective ways to resist authoritarianism from the ground up.
Quick Tips For Using These Resources
- Start small – Subscribe to one independent outlet and install one bias-checker.
- Diversify – If you read a mainstream outlet, balance it with a nonprofit or international perspective.
- Engage – Share articles with thoughtful commentary, not outrage.
- Support – Independent outlets survive on subscriptions, not clicks; even a small monthly donation matters.
- Educate others – Send this post or the ownership chart to friends and family who rely solely on cable or social media for news.
